A false color image reveals the extent of the damage caused by the fire, with remaining vegetation in green and burned areas in red. Photo: USGS Landsat/Flickr2011 brought about the most intense fire in Texan history: the Bastrop Complex Fire, which claimed almost 2,000 structures and effectively displaced an entire community. Now, two years later, that community is coming back together with the help of a highly organized recovery team to rebuild their homes and community, turning Bastrop from a wasteland gutted by fire bck into a lively settlement.

Austin remodelers, representatives of the Mennonite Disaster Service, and many more are coming together to rebuild homes in the area. Their work includes complex coordination to serve the needs of elderly and disabled residents as well as people who weren't adequately insured and renters who were driven from their homes. In this case, it would appear that it takes a village to rebuild a village.
