(AP) ISLAMABAD - ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistani military officials say security forces have foiled a cross-border attack from Afghanistan, killing six militants.

The officials say a group of about 70 militants attacked a border post in Pakistan's troubled northwestern Dir tribal region on Tuesday night.

The officials say the troops returned fire, killed six "terrorists" and wounded nine others. The rest of the attackers fled back to Afghanistan.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to media.

Pakistan and Afghanistan share a 2,250-kilometer (1,400-mile) border and militants from both sides often launch such cross-border attacks before fleeing back.

The latest attack comes at a time when Pakistan is carrying out a major military operation against militants in the country's North Waziristan region.
