(ABC 6 NEWS) -- "Last year, she did good things for us, but it was in spurts. Now, Mer outworks almost everybody on the team, so she really does a nice job of battling," Todd said.
"We lost a lot of seniors last year, and we have to step it up, because the majority of them were our top scorers. So somebody had to score," Austin center Mer Gach said.
That somebody is Gach.
The Packers junior leads Austin in points and rebounds.
"I thought her game really jumped over the summer," Johnson said. "She played some summer ball with us, and really became a force."
Talent seems to run in Mer's family.
Her twin brother Gach is a standout on the Packer boys team.
"I've been working with my brother in the offseason at the YMCA," Mer said. "We work on my free throw shooting, my form, and in the paint, where I play."
"She likes to talk a little smack about him. They go back-and-forth, so it's a lot of fun to have that discussion with her, about her brother is getting more rebounds or something," Johnson said. "It's fun to have that little rivalry with them, but they're both doing a nice job for Austin high this season."
The Packers are off to a much better start than last season, but Mer admits there's still work to be done.
"We encourage each other, and tell each other what we need to work on, and try and make it better the next time, the next game," Mer said.
