(ABC 6 News) -- Some believe your bowl of Cheerios just got a little cheerier. General Mills announced that they will no longer use genetically modified ingredients in their original Cheerios. Supporter of this decision say it's a big win.
Organic farmer, Rebecca Schwen and her family, try to eat all organic. But avoiding all genetically modified ingredients or GMO's is tricky.
"She's been eating cheerio's that aren't GMO free," said Schwen.
She says they worry her because of that lack of research done on their impact.
"We want to ensure of the safety of our food supply for future generations and letting GM's out there without being sure of the results, and not being able to control them is concerning," said Schwen.
So like many she was happy to hear that General Mills was going to cut GMO's out of her 9 month old Hazels favorite cereal Cheerios.
"We really applaud General Mills and we feel that it's indicative of the national discussion that's taking place," said The People’s Food Co-op Brad Smith.
Smith says they've seen an increase in customers concerned about the ingredients in their food, specifically GMO's.
"We are encouraged that people are talking about it and that it's entering the public discussion, people are becoming aware of the ingredients they are putting on their plate," said Smith.
General Mills said they made the decision after listening to their customers.
Schwen says the decision makes her proud of the Minnesota based company.
"People care to know what's in their food and General Mills is realizing that it's something that's important to people," said Schwen.
Don't expect to see any of their other brands change over as well. General Mills said that changing their other cereals like Honey Nut Cheerios to non-GMO would be difficult, if not impossible.
