(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Governor Mark Dayton announced Tuesday morning that his chief of staff, Tina Flint Smith, will be his running mate.

Smith helped lead Dayton's successful campaign for Governor, and he points to her leadership with that role, and others as why she's qualified to become Lieutenant Governor.

“Tina is the best administrator with whom I have ever worked. She has the exceptional ability to get people working together to make things happen,” said Governor Dayton. “She will soon be traveling across the state, listening to, and learning from, the people of Minnesota.”

Before working on Dayton's campaign, Smith was chief of staff to former Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak.  She has a marketing and communications background, and graduated from Standford University.

Dayton credits Smith as the person who, "Personally led the effort to make the first-of-its-kind Destination Medical Center in Southeastern Minnesota a reality."

Effective immediately, Smith has stepped down as chief of staff and has been replaced by Jaime Tincher.
