OMC Data Breach Update: Worker Claims Tax Refund Sent to Someone Else

(ABC 6 News) -- It was reported to the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office that an employee at the Olmsted Medical Center in Byron had their tax information stolen and the IRS has already sent their tax return to someone else.

The Rochester Police Department told us they've had about a dozen reports of this happening. This comes more than a week after OMC officials admitted to employees data being breached.

Last week, OMC employees started registering for what's called ‘legal shield identity protection’ that was paid for by OMC. Employees had been told to fill out specific forms with the IRS related to identity theft and are being encouraged to file their 2013 income taxes as soon as possible. Roughly 500 former employees were asked to do the same.

OMC still isn't saying exactly what information was stolen, but part of the focus is on tax-related information. The ongoing investigation shows it did not include any employee health information or any information of OMC patients.

The FBI is still investigating the data breach. The Rochester Police Department and Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office are not directly involved in the investigation but have been taking in complaints from employees.
