(ABC 6 NEWS) -- Thousands of people are without power Thursday morning.  Crews appeared to be making progress in the early hours, but outage numbers have been climbing as the day goes on.

People's Energy Cooperative Services is reporting more than 1,600 outages as of 8:30 a.m., and Mower-Freeborn Cooperative just shy of 1,000 outages.

Both People's Energy and FMCS also say they're receiving reports of low hanging lines.  They're urging everyone to stay away from them, as the hanging power lines are potentially energized and dangerous.  Trees or debris in contact with the lines also have the potential to deliver a fatal shock.

If you see a downed or low power line, call your energy company, or 911.
