Carleton College holds a vigil today for its students in the car crash.
The vigil was held to remember 20-year-old James Adams, 21-year-old Paxton Harvieux and 20-year-old Michael Goodgame.
The broadside crash happened on Highway 3 at County Road 47 in Dakota County around 3 p.m.
According to the state patrol, an SUV carrying five students was northbound on Highway 3 when it spun out and went into the southbound lanes. The semi, which was southbound, hit the vehicle broadside on the passenger side.
According Lt. Eric Roeske, all three died at the scene.
The driver of the SUV, William Sparks, 20, of Evanson, Ill., along with passanger Connor Eckert, 19, of Seattle, Wash.,were both hospitalized at Hennepin County Medical Center. Sparks was in satisfactory condition and Eckert was in serious condition Saturday morning.
The state patrol said everyone was wearing a seat belt.
The driver of the truck, 56-year-old Danny Terry, of Pioneer, Tenn., had no apparent injury, according to the state patrol.
Adams, of St. Paul, was a chemistry major, Harvieux, of Stillwater, was a computer science major and Goodgame, of Westport, Conn., was a political science major. All three were juniors. Sparks is an economics major and and Eckert, a freshman, had not declared a major.
The trio played on the school's Ultimate Frisbee team, which finished third in the country last year, according to the college.
“We offer our most heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the families and friends of James, Michael and Paxton, and we hope and pray for the full recovery of Will and Conor,” Carleton President Steven G. Poskanzer said in a statement sent to the campus community. “The collective Carleton soul aches for the loss of these three young men. Right now, we need to focus all our love and compassion on supporting the families and friends of all these young men, along with everyone in our community who cares for them.”
Counseling services have been made available to students.
A memorial fund has been set up for Harvieux, according to a family member. Donations can be made at any TCF Bank branch to the "Paxton Harvieux Memorial Fund.
