MONTEZUMA, Iowa (AP) - Two 15-year-old boys have been charged in connection to the fatal shooting of a bald eagle near Montezuma in February.
Des Moines television station KCCI reports the teens face multiple charges in connection to the Feb. 12 shooting, including unlawful use of a loaded gun.
Authorities say the bird was shot near Montezuma, about 50 miles east of Des Moines. It was taken to a veterinarian in Grinnell and later died from its injuries.
The station reports the state Department of Natural Resources will confiscate any weapons used in the incident. The agency also plans to suspend the teens' hunting rights.
The case will be turned over to juvenile court. The Associated Press typically doesn't name minors suspected of crimes.
Shooting an eagle is a federal offense.
