After months of demolition, construction of the new Lowertown Ballpark in St. Paul began Wednesday.
Crews poured the first concrete footings at the site on Fifth and Broadway Streets in the Lowertown neighborhood, just east of downtown.
In March, the City of St. Paul and Ryan Companies announced a $43.8 million deal that finalized the construction documents and cost for labor and materials.
The 7,000-seat ballpark will be home to the Saint Paul Saints and amateur baseball teams from across the region. It is expected to be completed by Opening Day for the Saints in May 2015.
The project is expected to create 500 full- and part-time jobs. Learn more about the project here.
City officials expect it to attract 400,000 people to downtown St. Paul each year, bringing in millions of dollars for the city.
