(ABC 6 News) -- Bikers are now pedaling across Iowa in the 42nd annual RAGBRAI event. The ride takes participants across Iowa for one week, making stops each night in different cities.

Forest City is one of the stops along the way.

"We only have a population of about 4,000 people and we're going to bring in about 20,000," said RAGBRAI Forest City Coordinator Gary Ludwig.

By Wednesday, bikers will be off to Mason City.

"Right now it seems really calm, but they're thinking maybe 30,000 people will be downtown," said Mason City RAGBRAI Coordinator Jodee O’Brien.

RAGBRAI will double Mason City’s population in just one day.

"Just crazy. Bikers will be coming in, in swarms," said O’Brien.

Both cities are welcoming riders and looking forward to a boost in business.

"We should expect a little over 3 million dollars will be coming into the community for an economic impact," said O’Brien.

Forest City and Mason City have been involved in months of preparation to have riders in their city for one day.

"About every 2 week, we all get together. I have 20 committees that we're in charge of that kind of oversee, but I got really good people," said Ludwig.

"Thousands of volunteers by the time this is over. Thousands of hours, and it's really cool how the community is coming together and everybody is volunteering their time," said O’Brien.

This is the fourth time Forest City has been an overnight stop on the RAGBRAI route. The last time Mason City was involved in RAGBRAI was in 1985.
