(ABC 6 News) -- The Stewartville City Council decided against an ordinance that would have allowed backyard chickens. Tuesday, council members voted down the proposal 3 to 2.
The issue was first raised by 10-year-old Cooper Reed at a city council meeting. Residents ABC 6 spoke with were divided on the issue. Some felt it would be a good learning opportunity for students like Reed. Others called it a nuisance and were concerned about the noise and odor.
A public hearing in July helped councilors get input from residents and make their decision. City Administrator Bill Schimmel, Jr. says no further action will be taken on the issue unless residents or a council member decides to bring it up again.
