(ABC 6 News) -- For 20 years, Mower County Relay for Life has been raising money for cancer research. Tonight, they will walk to remember loved ones and support survivors.
"We’re honoring survivors remembering loved ones that have been lost to cancer,” said Linda Baier. "I've been doing this for 16 years and it just becomes a big family."
Donna Novak was given two years to live.
"I am a cancer patient fighter," said Donna Novak.
Eight years later, she is still fighting.
"The doctors are still surprised I'm still here. But you know what, it's not up to me. I'm giving it a fight and it's up to the good lord," said Novak.
"That was in 2006 and here it is, 2014, and here my wife and I are still sitting together," said Gene Novak. "You know how that Timex watch is, it keeps on taking. It takes a lickin' but it keeps on tickin.'"
For now, Novak is taking life by the day, continuing to fight for a cure.
"With hope, with hope, someday there will be no more. They'll find the cure and we'll be done with it," said Novak.
Mower County Relay for Life raises money by selling luminary lanterns for 10 dollars. Last year, the event raised nearly $100 thousand.
