University of New Mexico football coach Bob Davie suspended sophomore defensive back Devonta Tabannah, effectively immediately, following a violation of team rules.

Tabannah was arrested Sunday on a DWI charge and was also cited for not having a driver's license, no proof of insurance, among other traffic violations.

Tabannah will not practice this week, nor play in Saturday’s season opener against Southern.

Tabannah played in six games last year with three starts before missing the last five games with knee and ankle injuries.  He made 13 tackles on the season, with a career-high seven tackles against Texas Tech in week three in a reserve role.
