A New Mexico girl has become the first pediatric patient in New Mexico to undergo a new surgery for seizures.

An AFD spokesman tells KOB that Alicia Jacquez, 12, successfully underwent surgery Monday - and now has a long road ahead of her.

The fire department has been rallying behind her - we told you last week about their "Random Acts of Kindness" program to benefit her and others.

During surgery Monday, doctors at UNM Children's Hospital removed part of her brain - and we are happy to report that everything went well.

Therapists will now work with Jacquez to mitigate side effects, which could include memory loss and speech problems.

Stay with KOB as we continue to follow her story.
