A film based on New Mexico author Rudolfo Anaya's book "Bless Me, Ultima" will open this year's Santa Fe Independent Film Festival.

"Bless Me, Ultima" is a drama set in New Mexico during World War II.

The story follows the relationship between a man and an elderly medicine woman. The woman helps the man battle with the good and evil in his village.

The film premieres Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Santa Fe's Warehouse 21 theatre.
