ALBQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A Picuris Pueblo woman faces up to five years in prison after pleading guilty to a federal indictment charging her with embezzling $132,000 from the tribal organization.
The U.S. Attorney's Office says 61-year-old Norma Mermejo worked as an accounting clerk for the pueblo before being terminated in 2010.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Mermejo admitted in Albuquerque federal court Wednesday that she took money on 144 occasions during a two-year period.
The plea agreement says Mermejo stole the money to support a gambling habit and pay expenses such as utility bills.
Mermejo also could be fined up to $250,000. Her sentencing has not yet been scheduled.
