ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The Navajo Nation Council has sent Republican U.S. Senate nominee Heather Wilson a letter in support of her energy platform.
The legislative branch of the nation's largest American Indian reservation thanked Wilson for supporting the coal industry and blasting the Environmental Protection Agency for what it calls "untenable rulings" that could negatively impact the coal industry and jobs in the region. The EPA has been working to force utility companies to install better pollution controls and retire some coal-fired units at plants in northwestern New Mexico, where many Navajos are employed.
Council Speaker Johnny Naize wrote that Wilson supports a "balanced approach" to environmental issues and energy policy.
Wilson's Democratic opponent Martin Heinrich is being backed by environmental groups for his support of clean air and renewable energy policies.
