KOB Eyewitness News 4 has a long-standing commitment to covering politics in New Mexico.

That is why, as part of our Decision 2012 Election Coverage, we are giving each candidate in some of the big federal races two minutes of free airtime to explain who they are, and why you should vote for them.

Friday night, we have Republican candidate for U.S. House - Jefferson Byrd.

Hello, I’m Jefferson Byrd and I’m asking for your vote.

I was born in Springer, New Mexico and grew up on the family ranch in the Northeastern side of the state. I learned about faith and family and hard work.

I went to New Mexico State University and got a Bachelors of Science & Engineering. I practiced environmental engineering for a little over 13 years.

My wife Suzanne is a school teacher, and she has her own business also in engineering. We have two boys, 8 and 10, Noah and Zachary. I’ve been ranching a little over four years full time.

I’m running because I’m concerned about the direction Northern New Mexico is taking. We see job losses all across Northern New Mexico at a rate that is higher than Southern New Mexico can keep up.

The Permian Basin is booming; San Juan Basin is losing jobs. Silver City is booming; the mine at the Navajo Nation is being threatened with closure along with the mines. We’re losing jobs at the Los Alamos [National] Labs, Cannon Air Force Base; and, ranching and agriculture all the way across Northern New Mexico.

We need a congressman that will get up and fight for New Mexico, and I am that congressman. Vote for me, Jefferson Byrd, and vote for progress here in New Mexico. Thank you.
