The Great Coyote Hunt of 2012 hasn't happened yet - but there's already a victim. If you're at Elizabeth Rael's house in Los Lunas and the phone rings, don't answer - unless you want an earful about the coyote-killing contest.
Rael got a new phone number about three months ago, but it's the old phone number of the Gun Hawk gun store in Los Lunas, sponsor of a controversial coyote hunting contest.
That's why Elizabeth keeps getting phone calls like one she received from a woman who describes herself as a rancher from Colorado.
"Praise God that they're shooting coyotes," said the message on Rael's answering machine. "They eat our calves and they eat our sheep and our baby sheep, yes ma'am they do!"
Rael said a lot of the calls are from people angry about the coyote hunt. She said if she gets on the line and tries to tell them it's the wrong number, they'll argue about that too.
Her answering message tells callers it's not the gun store, but Rael says they ignore that and start ranting.
"At 10:30 at night you know you're thinking something happened to somebody and you answer it and it's for Gun Hawk,"Rael said. "I don't have time for that! I'm tired of it! Just quit calling!"
Rael and her husband don't get much consolation out of knowing that the hunt takes place on Nov. 17 and 18. That's ten days away - and the calls just keep on coming.
