Thursday is the American Cancer Society's "Great American Smokeout", and the state's Department of Health wants to help people quit.
The department said nearly 290,000 New Mexicans smoke. Tobacco use results in approximately 21,000 deaths in the state each year.
The department is offering several useful tools and they're free. They are offering free counseling services, as well as nicotine patches and gum.
Smokers who are interested in quitting can call the department's hotline at 1-800-QUIT NOW (1-800-784-8669) or visit their website at QuitNowNM.com.
