The New Mexico Lobos showed no signs of jet lag from its trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands and defeated the Idaho Vandals Friday night at The Pit 73-58.
Demetrius Walker played big off the bench for the Lobos (5-0).
The guard shot a perfect 5-5 from behind the 3-point line and dropped 19 points to lead New Mexico.
His play off the bench spurned a 14-0 run Idaho carried over from halftime.
The Vandals (1-3) held a 46-43 lead over New Mexico with 15 minutes left in the game. Walker scored 7 straight points and the Lobos retained an advantage Idaho did not overcome.
Connor Hill and Kyle Barone led the Vandals with 20 and 16. However the Lobos limited the pair to just 9 points combined in the second half.
The Vandals shot 60 percent from behind the 3 point line in the first half, but was held to just 2-14 shooting from long range in the second.
Nine different Lobos scored in the game. Alex Kirk chipped in 11 points and 9 rebounds. Kendall Williams had 10 points and 7 assists. Tony Snell had 6 points and 7 assists.
The Lobos and the Vandals head into the locker room tied at halftime, 36-36.
Idaho is shooting 14 for 27 from the field and 60 percent from behind the arc.
The Vandals have played pesky defense and plugged several runs by the Lobos with their own scoring sprees.
Connor Hill has 15 points and Kyle Barone scored 12 for Idaho. Seven players have scored in the game for New Mexico.
Demetrius Walker came off the bench to lead the Lobos with 10 points.
He is a perfect 3 for 3 from behind the 3-point line. New Mexico opened the game with three straight 3-point baskets.
Idaho then caused three straight turnovers to take the lead early in the game.
The Lobos went on a 7-0 run before Idaho capped an 8-0 run of its own to tie the game at halftime.
Tony Snell has 4 points and Kendall Williams has scored 6 points for the Lobos in the first half.
The New Mexico men’s basketball team returns to Albuquerque to take on the Idaho Vandals.
UNM brought home a Paradise Jam championship from the U.S. Virgin Islands, a trip that included wins against George Mason and No. 21 UConn.
The Lobos (4-0) average 72.0 points on 41.2 percent shooting.
Idaho (1-2) has losses against Wright State and Montana. The Vandals defeated Green Bay 72-62 on Saturday.
Idaho is led by leading scorers Stephen Madison and Kyle Barone, each averaging 17.3 points per game.
