Roswell Police say an Albertson’s employee reported a surprising find in a package of frozen meat they received from a distributor.
“While unpacking meat for Albertson’s, they located this gun in the meat, in the actual packaged case,” Sgt. Jim Preston said. “At that time they removed it from the store and brought it to the Roswell Police Department.”
The employee cleaned the gun before bringing it into RPD, which made it difficult to trace as evidence.
“We are investigating where the actual firearm came from,” Preston said. “It is not listed in NCIC as a stolen firearm, so we are going to do an actual firearm search through the ATF to attempt to determine where the firearm came from.”
That search, done through the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, could take weeks or even months.
The box said it was packaged in June 2011. “It just tells us that we do have a large amount of time that has passed,” Preston said. “And if it was stolen we would have thought that by know it would have been entered into the actual database, NCIC, as a stolen firearm... but we don't have any of that information and it is something we're looking into.”
The gun did not come in contact with consumers or cause any notable issues at the store.
