SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - State regulators are ordering New Mexico Gas Co. to improve its plans for helping customers during severe weather events that could impact natural gas supplies.
Thursday's order from the Public Regulation Commission came after an investigation into a February 2011 gas shortage that left thousands of New Mexicans without gas for heat during a prolonged cold snap.
The Santa Fe New Mexican reports (http://bit.ly/UFMOfz ) regulators approved stricter rules utilities must follow during severe weather events last month. They'll be required to consider backup fuel supplies and alternatives in planning for severe weather.
New Mexico Gas has maintained it had ordered enough natural gas but couldn't get all it ordered. Electrical outages impacted major interstate pipelines in Texas and southeastern New Mexico, which in turn hurt New Mexico Gas.
