A Christmas morning heist at a Walmart left Los Lunas Police needing the public’s help. Thieves got away with more than $30,000 worth of merchandise including firearms.

Three people dressed in black with masks covering their faces trolled the store. They smashed out glass to steal video games and electronics. Surveillance video showed the vandals using a crow bar to pry open the jewelry counter and stealing cartons of cigarettes near a register.

According to Los Lunas Police Chief Roy Melnick, they also stole at least four rifles.

"The rifles are going to be have to sold illegally,” Melnick said. “Whoever will buy a rifle illegally will use it for illegal purposes. They could here stay within our county or within our state and be used in a more violent crime like an armed robbery or a domestic or a murder. The guns could be shipped over the border to Mexico and be used by the drug cartel."

Walmart has an elaborate network of security cameras which picked up the thieves every move. Surveillance video reviewed by KOB Eyewitness News 4 showed a store security guard parked in the same spot for more than an hour while the heist was happening inside the store.

Los Lunas Police are investigating whether this was an inside job or not. Call the Los Lunas Police Department at 505-865-9130 if you think you can help this case.
