On Monday night Albuquerque City Council will consider whether to rename an Albuquerque community center after the late boxer Johnny Tapia.
Councilman Ken Sanchez is trying to get the Wells Park Community Center renamed to honor Tapia, who died in May of heart disease.
The measure was tabled at a previous council meeting.
Tapia considered the center his sanctuary – he trained there, worked there and was married there.
But some have spoken out against naming the center after Tapia, saying his drug use and arrest record did not make him a good role model for young people using the center.
Ideas discussed previously include naming a part of the center after Tapia.
The council will discuss the matter Monday night - watch KOB Eyewitness News 4 at 10 for updates on what happens.
