There is plenty of illegal parking around UNM athletic fields. KOB Eyewitness News 4 saw fans parking in permit only areas during the Lobo basketball game Wednesday night. But the city admits it was not enforcing parking, and hasn't for any Lobo basketball game this season.

"If they're not going to cite why did they waste all this money putting these signs in," Lillian Listy told KOB4. She lives in a permit parking neighborhood near The Pit. She doesn't mind Lobo fans parking around her home but questions the lack of enforcement.

City officials said they will help UNM with parking enforcement if the school asks. But the city said UNM has not asked for help with parking enforcement for any Lobo basketball game so far. But UNM did ask the city for help enforcing parking for Lobo football games.

Late Wednesday evening, UNM officials were working to get us a response. Initially, permit parking was put in place to prevent a lot of football tailgating problems, such as people littering and even urinating on lawns around University Stadium. And some people have had problems parking at their own homes.

But there's really no tailgating for basketball games, like the one late Wednesday. And we also saw that illegal parking wasn't overwhelming nearby neighborhoods. Fines for violating permit parking are $20.
