Opening arguments began Thursday in the trial of the accused arroyo molester.

Genaro Sandoval is accused of raping and molesting several boys in Albuquerque arroyos between 2003 and 2005.

This first trial is only for one of the cases - the rape of an 11-year-old boy in 2003.

Prosecutors are relying on DNA evidence in the case.

But the defense argues that evidence is not enough.

“There are no fingerprints in this case,” Sandoval’s attorney Joseph Newton Riggs said. There's no identification on those muddy shoeprints in this case.”

“There is absolutely no one else on earth who it could be other than the defendant,” the prosecution said.

The trial is expected to last up to three weeks.
