The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man accused of stabbing and running over the boyfriend of his former daughter-in-law.

Deputies said Kenneth Johnson, 54, of Bloomfield, stabbed Richard Lopez, 27, of Blanco, Tuesday after hearing rumors that Lopez was abusing Johnson’s 12-year-old grandson.

Lopez is the boyfriend of the 12-year-old’s mother - who is Johnson's former daughter-in-law.

Lopez told deputies he saw a vehicle parked down the road from his house for an extended period of time and went to see if the driver needed help. As Lopez arrived at Johnson’s truck, he accelerated at him.  Lopez swerved to avoid a collision. Johnson immediately approached his driver door and asked if he was Lopez, and told him he was going to kill him. Lopez attempted to speed away, but his tires spun out in the snow and he slid into a small ditch. He got out of the car where Johnson began to stab him, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said Lopez’s girlfriend pulled Johnson off Lopez. Johnson then got into his truck and accelerated at the couple and struck Lopez. He attempted to strike Lopez a second time before finally fleeing from the scene.

Lopez was taken to San Juan Regional Hospital with at least one stab wound to his abdomen and numerous cuts to his hands.

Johnson was intercepted by a Bloomfield Police officer. He was placed under arrest and now faces aggravated battery and assault with a deadly weapon charges and criminal damage to property charges. He’s being held at the San Juan County Detention Center on a $35,000 bond.
