Albuquerque parents are up in arms after they discovered their children are waiting for their school bus weekday mornings near a sex offender’s residence.

The parents and their children live near Irving and Golf Course. The children attend Petroglyph Elementary School.

Their bus stop on Cardinal is just feet away from 42-year-old Daniel Abdul Amiri. Amiri was convicted in 1999 of criminal sexual contact of a minor and criminal sexual penetration.

Albuquerque Public Schools spokesperson told KOB Eyewitness News 4 they don't have a set policy for bus stops near sex offenders. That news was shocking to parents.

"I was surprised first of all and upset because I didn't know that APS really doesn't have a policy for that and especially because I have a little kid and a 16-year-old and that's something that I wasn't aware of," parent Priscilla Escobedo said.

"I thought they weren't allowed to live close at all," another parent said.

The school district did tell KOB 4 that if law enforcement confirms an offender lives near a bus stop, the District does everything in their power to fix it.

Rio Rancho school officials said they check the sex offender registry before setting a bus stop. They say they don't place bus stops within 500 feet of a registered sex offender.
