Emotional testimony was heard Thursday as the mother of a 4-month-old recalled the moment she found her baby dead.

The little girl's father, Robert Flores, is charged with her death.

It has taken five years for the case to go to trial, and in that time it has gained notoriety since Flores was a former star quarterback at Artesia High School.

Even though the incident happened five years ago, the pain expressed by baby Kalynne's mother as she testified against Flores was as if it happened yesterday.

The most difficult moment of Desiree Mondragon's life, as she explained to the jury, was finding her daughter unresponsive and in the care of her father, Flores.

"I was an emotional wreck, crying hysterically and wishing that it was just a horrible dream," Mondragon said. "When I first suspected that she wasn't breathing, she was pale really, really pale. I started giving her CPR and she started to turn blue."

Prosecutors said Flores put Kalynne inside a basket full of clothes inside a closet in the former couple's Las Cruces home,a dn then he left her there while he went to buy beer.

Then while watching a movie and drinking, he allegedly forgot about his baby until finding her dead in that same closet where he left her.

These are among details Flores didn't at first disclose.

"I just remember him saying that he was sorry that he had drank," Mondragon said. "He said, it was his fault, he should have been watching her."

While at the hospital, Mondragon said the emergency room doctor came told her it was obvious Kalynne had passed away at home. Mondragon explained to the jury that when she first saw her daughter lying so still Flores tried to convince her she was just sleeping before realizing that was far from the truth.
