News editors at the Santa Fe New Mexican are reacting to the tragic shooting of a former colleague.
Mark Hummels worked at the newspaper from 1998 to 2001. He left to go to law school.
He was shot in a Phoenix, Ariz. office building Wednesday while representing a client.
His former editors at the paper are now finding themselves in a role reversal, reacting to the news while also having to report it.
"You know these things happen, but when they happen to somebody you know and who you worked with, it brings it home," City Editor Howard Houghton said.
The law firm where Hummels works in Arizona released a statement Thursday that he is not expected to survive.
