CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) - A stolen Martin Luther King Jr. plaque from a Clovis city park has been found destroyed.

The Portales News-Tribune reports that Clovis Police Chief Steve Sanders said the 24-by-30 bronze plaque was found Friday "in pieces" at Clovis Recycling. He says the plaque was located after recycling employees had been warned to be on the lookout for the plaque because of its value as scrap metal.

Sanders says police have identified a suspect but no arrests have been made.

Joyce Pollard, president of the Clovis Martin Luther King Jr. Commission, called the theft "unthinkable."

The Martin Luther King Jr. plaque was the centerpiece of a monument created in 2003 at Potter Park at a cost of $7,000.
