A New Mexico inmate is refuting allegations he was one of two hit-men hired to murder and castrate pop star Justin Bieber.
State police learned about the plot through recorded phone calls. None of the recorded conversations released have Staake on the line; instead, there are calls between convicted killer Dana Martin and Staake's nephew, Tanner Ruane.
KOB Eyewitness News 4 was the first local news station to interview Mark Staake at the Metropolitan Detention Center Tuesday. Staake said he feels he has been made out to be some kind of monster in a mess he had nothing to do with and did not know anything about. Staake met Martin in jail in Las Cruces, where Martin allegedly contrived the whole plan.
When asked what Staake would have told Martin if he had asked him to carry out such a plan, he said, "I would have told him you're crazy, you're out of your mind. He's a sociopathic, homicidal pedophile."
The sick plan was blatantly discussed in a phone conversation between Martin and Ruane, who was supposedly working with Staake.
Martin is heard asking, "Did he go over the Bieber thing with you?"
Ruane replied, "He was gonna handle the whole put down of the dog and then I was gonna go, snip snip."
Martin clarified, "So he was gonna kill the pit bulls and you were gonna castrate?" To which Ruane responded, "Yep... F*** dude, I wish, f***, I wish this could have been completed brother."
But while on their way to allegedly do it, Staake was arrested in Vermont in November on a parole violation. He told KOB Eyewitness News 4, at the time he was arrested he knew nothing about the Bieber plot.
"I couldn't stop laughing for 45 minutes because it's just so, I mean, quite frankly I would have had a better chance of going and kidnapping Osama Bin Laden and killing him than getting anywhere remotely close to Justin Bieber," Staake said. "It was never my intention. It never was planned, and I hope he has a happy life."
When it comes to Staake's alibi, he said he was not on any sort of murder mission but instead had planned a last minute road trip out east to pick up a Ferrari that Martin had given him the title to.
