Something is not right in Rio Rancho. Traffic signs are disappearing and there seems to be one sign that's a favorite for thieves. It's a dangerous problem that Rio Rancho Police want to stop.
We're not just talking about one or two signs. Nearly 20 signs have been stolen in just the last two weeks. Police Sgt. Nicholas Onken said that thieves have taken about $2,000 worth of signs.
"We definitely are starting to take a hit in the pocketbook as a city and have real concerns about allowing this activity to continue unchecked."
Besides wanting the public to be on the lookout for the thieves, Rio Rancho Police also want people to know that they are willing to pay for any information leading to an arrest. Resident William Costley said he'll be watching.
"I'd like to find them so I could get that reward. I think that's excellent that they are putting the reward out there. I think it will encourage people to turn people in or encourage people not to continue to doing the behaviors."
Rio Rancho Police are worried a sign taken from a remote area could lead to a safety risk. Especially when you consider the ROAD CLOSED sign seems to be stolen the most often. Sgt. Onken would like to see someone do the right thing.
"If the signs are returned, no questions will be asked. But if anyone knows who is doing this we really, really encourage them to contact crime stoppers."
If you know any information or can help Rio Rancho Police to an arrest for the sign thefts you're asked to call Crimestoppers at 843-STOP. You could be eligible for up to a $1,000 reward.
