ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Just days after announcing plans to step down embattled Albuquerque Police Chief Ray Schultz is scheduled to give details on his decision amid a U.S. Justice Department investigation into the police department.
Schultz and Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry are expected Monday to outline the future of the department and a search for a new chief. Schultz decision to retire also came as a jury awarded the family of an Iraq War veteran who was shot and killed by police a $10 million award.
The city has seen a string of officer-involved shootings - 18 of them fatal - since 2010.
The department also has been plagued by a number of high-profile cases alleging excessive force, including some cases caught on video.
