The State of New Mexico filed criminal charges Thursday against Torrance County Manager Joy Ansley and contractor Chris Valdez, court records show. The legal action comes nearly a year after a KOB 4 On Your Side investigation revealed possible contract rigging.
Last April, the 4 On Your Side team exposed that Valdez was awarded nearly $750,000 in contracts for various county construction projects, but how he attained those contracts received speculation from one county official who suspected a possible inappropriate relationship between Ansley and Valdez.
State Auditor Hector Balderas looked into the matter.
And now the state is taking action through the justice system. Ansley and Valdez face multiple charges of fraud, conspiracy and making false public vouchers – all felony charges.
