The question still remains over the buyout Steve Alford, or his new employer UCLA, could have to pay.
His new contract would have gone into effect on Monday.
The old contract had a buyout of $150,000, the new contract has a buyout of $1 million.
When asked whether Alford could be slapped with the bigger price tag, UNM Athletic Director Paul Krebs said, "I'm not a lawyer, coach Alford and I haven't even talked about it, there was a letter of agreement - is that a contract?”
It’s also murky who would foot the buyout bill, though routinely a coach’s new employer handles such matters.
"That happened between Dan and his staff and my agent so I'm not sure what all was talked about,” Alford said.
We reached out to Krebs’ representative tonight and he claimed the lawyers hadn’t had a chance to hammer things out yet.
He said he’d let us know when they did.
"One way or another there's a buyout, how much that is, Steve and I haven't talked about it,” Krebs said. “Our respective lawyers haven't talked about it so I can't tell you what the number is but I know there is a buyout."
