Governor Susana Martinez will be in Albuqerque Monday morning to make several fire-related announcements and to mark the start of Wildfire Awareness Week in New Mexico.
Governor Martinez will sign wildfire-related legislation into law and will announce the details of a plan to employ recent war veterans as seasonal firefighters.
This comes as New Mexico enters a highly dangerous fire season, caused by drought that led to low fuel moisture levels, low levels of water in reservoirs and low levels of snow-pack.
At the event, fire officials from across the state will also break down ways people who live in fire-prone forests can keep their homes safe.
They suggest keeping at least 30 feet of clear space around homes and planning a route for potential emergency crews.
