It's the moment Albuquerque baseball fans have been waiting all winter for: opening day at Isotopes park. From the food to the field, there' s a lot that's new this year.
General Manager John Traub says the new turf of lush, green Kentucky Blue Grass mix is the first new thing you'll notice at the park. It's the first turf change in the stadium's 10 years.
"It's got 120 games a year between professional, college, high school etc. You know about 120 events on our field every year times 10 years - that's a lot of wear and tear," says Traub.
Fans won't be able to miss our favorite mascot, Orbit, who will be larger than life.
"The biggest thing that people are really going to notice is the 30-foot inflatable Orbit bounce house up in our fun zone in right field," says Traub.
Whether fans come to enjoy the game, the nice weather or the food - there is something for everyone.
"I am super excited about the food," says Executive Chef Scot Eastburn.
Among the new food items at the park this year on the concession level are a gluten-free boxed lunch and the dessert nachos.
"It's fresh fried cinnamon tortilla chips with chocolate sauce, a strawberry yogurt dipping sauce and fruit salsa," says Eastburn of the dessert nachos.
"Its a very picky crowd here in Albuquerque," he said. "They have very very good taste so we have to bring them the best."
