It was a chaotic scene inside an Albuquerque nightclub Saturday night.
Shots rang out at Copa Cabana, killing one and injuring another. Two men accused in the shooting are now behind bars.
Police identified the man shot and killed as Jabar Lewis and a second victim, hospitalized, as Angelo Burdex. According to the criminal complaints, the trouble started around the time of last call at the bar.
Dancing, drinking, you expect to find it all at a nightclub.
But blood-stained cement, shattered glass, and a trail of beer cans, paint a very different picture outside Copa Cabana, located at 4100 Central Avenue SE.
"They need to do something about that place," Joe Boveri, who lives nearby, said.
It was packed Saturday night when police said Matthew Mora started shooting at several individuals inside the nightclub.
"That's not the first time there's been gunfire there," Boveri said.
Mora pulled out a pistol and fired at several people when his friend, Ahmad Williams, got into a fight with two other guys who they have had previous issues with, according to the criminal complaint.
"They're constantly having trouble here with the police having to come break up fights," David Anderson, who also lives in the area, said.
KOB Eyewitness News 4 contacted the club's owner, Albuquerque attorney Gene Chavez, to ask if there have been any problems like this in the past.
"There's never been a shooting in the past," Chavez said over the phone.
But those who live over there are worried it may not be the last time, either.
"They might need to kinda beef up their security, not just at the front door," Boveri said, "Leave your gun at home."
