University of New Mexico students will pay higher tuition and fees next school year.  The Board of Regents approved recommendations Tuesday afternoon to increase the cost of education in order to pay higher salaries for faculty, give staff a one-time bonus, and add nearly a million dollars in additional fees for the athletics department.

Students will pay about $603 each semester in fees next semester, up from the current rate of $553.  Student leaders were upset by a last minute move by the Regents.  The athletics department will receive a total of $4 million from student fees.  An increase next year of $907,827 will take the funding to this new level.

Tuition will rise at most UNM campuses.

Albuquerque- Main Campus: 6.6 percent increase

Los Alamos Branch: 5.6 percent increase

Taos Branch: 5.88 percent increase

Grants Branch: no change

Valencia Branch: no change

Faculty will get a 3 percent raise.  UNM Staff will get a 1 percent raise plus a 1-time only $1000 bonus.
