An 18-year-old mother and her 17-year-old boyfriend face child abuse charges after an 11-month boy is found with broken bones and skull fractures.
According to the Albuquerque Police Department, the 11-month-old baby has two skull fractures, a sub-dural hematoma, four broken ribs, a broken arm and multiple bruises all over the body. Since being hospitalized, the baby has had seizures.
The baby’s mother Hanna Smith appeared before a judge Friday afternoon where the judge set her bond at $100,000.
Smith wiped tears away after hearing her bond amount.
In a police report, Smith blamed her boyfriend Leroy Garcia for the baby’s injuries. She claimed when she checked on the infant his eyes were rolling back and he had a “weird scream.” Smith admitted to spending the night with her boyfriend on the night the baby was injured. Police asked her how she could spend the night with a man who caused life-threatening injuries to the baby and she did not have an explanation.
Garcia denied hurting the baby. He told police Smith made comments about not wanting the child saying she wished she could give the baby to the infant’s biological father.
