A Southwest Albuquerque woman claims she contracted bed bugs while riding in an ABQ Ride bus.
The woman showed KOB Eyewitness News 4 bite marks on her arms, hands, and stomach claiming she got bit shortly after stepping off a bus.
"I take the bus every day to appointments and to my mom’s house," said Michelle Brooks. “I got off a bus on Central and walked to my mom's and I started getting bit on the side of my stomach. My mom picked up my shirt and there was actually a bed bug on my shirt that she saw."
Brooks claims she has found bites after three different times riding the bus. Transit department spokesman Rick De Reyes said he finds it unlikely that the bites originated on a city bus. De Reyes said buses are swept and picked up nightly and sanitized with bleach water once every two months.
Brooks said she filed a complaint, but De Reyes said he found no record of it.
"If something like that happened, we would have to scrub that bus completely,” e Reyes said. “But how would we know where to look if we never received that complaint in the first place?"
Brooks is certain her bites originated from a bus. No one can know for certain one way or another, but if they did, Brooks hopes the bugs don’t get off with her at her bus stop again.
