Copper thieves are hitting Roswell hard. In the last two weeks businesses and even churches have been targeted. And, the damage is adding up fast.

Copper is popular to steal, and thieves in Roswell seem to like getting it from air conditioners.

They even hit two churches.

Seventh Day Adventist has been hit three times in the last two weeks. Church of Christ, just a mile away, was hit twice. It is going to cost $14,000.

But thieves aren’t just targeting churches.

The owner of Alien City Florist says someone gutted four of her air conditioning units.

"To come and take things from people that have worked so hard to get them, and to come and just tear them apart and just take them is inexcusable," said Mary Verton.

If thieves hadn’t of scurried off and instead hit her main air conditioner, it would have cost the florist $5,000 to $7,000.

This is because of her flowers.

"Our refrigerators hold from 32 to 40 degrees to keep the flowers fresh all of the time, and it would have heated up just real quick and ruined all the flowers,” says Verton.

In the last two weeks the thefts add up to more than $40,000 in damage.

Police said they are investigating the thefts and are asking everyone in Roswell to be on the lookout and call them if they see anything suspicious.
