Albuquerque police say an 11-month-old baby is fighting for his life because of what his teenage mother and her boyfriend did to him. But both of the teens' families are defending them.
18-year-old Hanna Smith was in court Friday on child abuse charges. Police say Smith's infant son is barely alive, suffering from skull fractures and several broken bones.
In a criminal complaint, Smith blames her boyfriend, 17-year-old Leroy Garcia, for the abuse. Garcia is also facing child abuse charges.
Garcia's mother, Manuelita Garcia, told KOB 4 Friday her son would never hurt a child.
"I know my son didn't do it. He could never hurt a child, he's got one of his own," Garcia said.
But Smith's sister, Lindsey Smith, offered the same defense for the baby's mother.
"I believe she didn't hit her baby. I don't think that Hanna would ever do something like that, especially to her own child," Smith said.
Hanna Smith is being held in the Metropolitan Detention Center on a $100,000 dollar bond. Garcia is in the juvenile detention center.
