It’s a family affair in Loboland.
Cullen Neal announced Saturday he will play for New Mexico with his father, head coach Craig Neal.
The first installation in the Craig Neal days at New Mexico was made official Saturday via Twitter, a platform many Lobo fans used to lobby the 6-foot-4 point guard.
Neal was originally headed St. Mary’s. That changed when Steve Alford left New Mexico for UCLA and Craig Neal took over the basketball program’s head coaching position.
“Who would’ve known two weeks ago my dad would get the head coaching job and I would be playing for him,” Neal, wearing his new cherry and silver Lobo hoodie, said.
Neal averaged 26.5 points this season for Eldorado High School.
He sees himself playing a backup point guard role his first season.
The decision to forgo his commitment to the California school was difficult, he said.
“My mom said to make the best decision for me,” Neal said. “My dad said a lot of the same things. He also said he wanted me to play for him.”
