The recent death of a Navajo Code Talker has touched a Valencia County couple who have never even met him.
Daniel and Deborah Baca found a suitcase full of old mementos when they cleared out a storage unit for a friend 2 years ago. The old photos and letters belong to Code Talker Albert Smith. After going through it all, Daniel and Deborah say they feel like they know Albert Smith.
"He feels like family to us. We don't know him but he feels like family," Deborah Baca said.
For the past several years, the Baca's have tried to contact Smith to meet him and return his things, but were never able to find him. Then they saw the news that Smith died on Wednesday, and they contacted KOB Eyewitness News 4 to help.
"I want to do good and return these things which was going to end up in the trash," Daniel Baca said.
The president of the Navajo Code Talkers Association says she will help them return Smith's belongings to his family.
