UPDATE: Fire burns in windy conditions in Northern New Mexico; 70% contained

Crews from New Mexico State Forestry and San Miguel County are currently fighting the 283 Fire, located near NM 283 at mile marker 4 near Mineral Hill outside Las Vegas.

Strong winds are causing the fire to be quite active. The fire was first reported around 2 p.m. and has burned about 30 acres, Dan Ware with state forestry said.

By 6:00 p.m. it was reportedly 70 percent contained.

Vegatation in the area includes grass, pondorosa, oak and juniper. 

New Mexico State Police have called for four homes to be voluntarily evacuated as a precautionary measure and are assisting with traffic control in the area.
