Albuquerque police now say two people were killed in a one-car crash Sunday that may have been caused by speeding and drag racing.
Two people died in the crash, which happened Sunday at Central and Louisiana at about 8 p.m. when a white Lincoln sedan through the intersection of Central and Louisiana, crossed the median and entered oncoming lanes of Louisiana.
The car then ran up onto the sidewalk before striking the trees and a fixed object. The vehicle was badly mangled, requiring AFD personnel to extract the occupants.
The dead are Jorge Cano, 20, who was ejected and died at the scene, and Jessica Hernandez, 18, who died at the hospital. Police say the driver, Andres Quintana, 21, is in critical condition at UNM Hospital.
Investigators say that if Quintana survives, he could face charges including vehicular homicide and reckless driving.
Other passengers in the car included Jennifer Perez, 19, who suffered critical, life-threatening injuries, and Jayla Cano, 1, who was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
